Zicam

Zicam, manufactured and distributed by Matrixx Initiative, is a homeopathic cold treatment designed to decrease the duration of the common cold. Sold over the counter as a homeopathic remedy, this is a zinc-based solution, which is used intra-nasally. However, this solution has been linked to a condition known as anosmia – a total loss of the sense of smell.

As a homeopathic treatment, the FDA has no jurisdiction over the recall of this drug, and would not have been required to grant approval for its sale and use. Although the products could be taken off the market should there be proof that enough people have been harmed by it, the only other possibility is a voluntary recall by the manufacturer of the drug, Matrixx Initiative. Should the number of lawsuits against the manufacturer continue to rise, many think that Matrixx may voluntarily withdraw this treatment for fear of rising litigation.

Many have already filed lawsuits against Matrixx for the harmful and serious side effects of this treatment, which can affect the sense of taste through eliminating the sense of smell. With no warning on the packaging and labelling of this treatment, many people bought and used it oblivious to the possible harm that could be caused. Matrixx manufactures and distributes a range of products in the Zicam range, including Zicam cold swabs for kids, Zicam nasal moisturizer, and various Zicam nasal gels.

The homeowatch website recently reported on a case, where the manufacturers of Zicam were sued. The statement issued on the homeowatch site stated:

“On October 14, 2003, Dennis and Debra Christensen of Almena, Michigan, filed suit against the marketers of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, a homeopathic product claimed to "reduce the severity and duration of common cold symptoms even when treatment is started as late as the second day after onset of illness." The suit alleges that Dennis Christenson sustained permanent loss of his sense of smell following a single application of the product. Several similar cases were reported at a meeting of the American Rhinologic Society in September 2003. The case report authors state that direct application to the inner lining of the nose has long been known to produce loss of the sense of smell.”

This is one of the latest of a number of lawsuits filed against Matrixx by consumers that used these nasal treatments without realizing the implications and side effects that went hand in hand with this homeopathic remedy. Specially trained Zicam lawyers are now available to help those affected to claim compensation for harm caused by the solution and for suffering and medical expenses that may have been incurred.
