PPA

Phenylpropanolamine, also known as PPA, is found in a large number of both prescription and over the counter medications. This chemical is used in a range of medical products, such as nasal decongestants, cough and cold medicines, weight loss products, and appetite suppressors. Concern was raised over PPA due to evidence that showed that this chemical could increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding of the brain), particularly in younger women.

Figures released by the Food and Drugs Administration linked between two and five hundred hemorrhagic strokes to PPA, and estimated that six billion doses of this chemical were sold each year – mainly in over the counter drugs. Although the FDA tried to impose a ban on PPA sales in November 2000, they had no jurisdiction over medications sold over the counter, and these products continued to fly off the shelves.

Many big name drugs manufacturers and pharmaceutical giants used PPA in their products. This included GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, and Bayer. These and other drug manufacturers now find themselves facing mass legal action due to harm and injury caused by their products containing PPA. Bayer was ordered to pay nearly half a million dollars to the first PPA against the drugs giant, after a man who has suffered a stroke filed a lawsuit against Bayer. The stroke resulted from taking a cough medicine that contained PPA.

Bayer – and other drugs companies – are reportedly setting aside funds to settle US lawsuits resulting from harm and damage caused by PPA. Over twelve hundred people the US are reported to have suffered serious strokes after taking medication containing PPA, according to a Bayer spokesperson. With many people having been affected by this chemical, the number of lawsuits and compensation claims filed against the various drug manufacturing companies is likely to keep on rising.
