The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance has launched a state program called the Controlled Substance Database, which is designed to help monitor prescription for controlled drugs such as Oxycontin.
The purpose of the database is to pick up on any potential addicts based upon prescriptions being issued, and to then provide help and assistance to those with addiction problems. The database will have to be completed on a twice monthly basis by pharmacists and healthcare workers to ensure that it is kept up-to-date.
Meredith Sullivan, assistant commissioner of the department's division of regulatory boards, stated: "The intent is to identify individuals who may have an addiction issue and provide them the needed education and treatment options. We hope that it will improve the health care profession by giving them access to this information to assist in providing treatment options to their patients."
Officials from the ACLU of Tennessee state that similar programs in other states have worked very well, and they are optimistic that this program will also prove successful in Tennessee.
