A former police department chemist has been arrested after allegations that she was taking drugs that were to be used as evidence in cases and was stealing them for her own needs. Among the drugs that 30-year-old Colleen Brubaker took were Oxycontin pills, which are prescription drugs derived from opium and used to treat severe pain.
As a result of these thefts a number of cases have had to be dismissed with around 30 others remaining under review due to lack of evidence. Defense attorneys are asking for hundreds of other cases to be reviewed given the compromise on evidence that has come about as a result of the former chemists actions.
It was confirmed that Brubaker had been the examining chemist in hundreds of cases. She resigned from her post when the investigation started in May. She has been described by authorities as a chemist turned addict, and came under investigation after authorities became suspicious in relation to the amount of times she was checking evidence out.
One official stated: By charging the chemist Brubaker the District Attorneys Office has agreed with us that she acted improperly in many cases. At a minimum those cases need to be re-opened and dismissed.
