Merck has been hit with thousand of lawsuits over the past couple of years after it was discovered that Vioxx could increase the risk of serious side effects such as heart attacks and strokes.
The Atlantic County Court has found itself overloaded with lawsuits that have been filed against the drug manufacturer by those suffering ill effects after taking the cox-2 inhibitor Vioxx, as well as by the relatives of patients that have died as a result of taking the painkiller.
With 14,000 Vioxx related lawsuits that have been filed over the last two years to deal with, the Atlantic County Court and now the State Administrative Office of Courts, stating that extra assistance is needed in order to properly deal with the number of lawsuit that have been filed.
The court has made an official request for five new hires, and this has been approved by the State Administrative Office of Courts. Vioxx was pulled from the market in 2004, after the details relating to its serious side effects came to light.
