Another lawsuit has been filed against the pharmaceutical giant Merck over its controversial painkiller Vioxx, a cox-2 inhibitor that was found to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and was withdrawn from the market in 2004. Thousands of lawsuits have already been filed against Merck, and so far the company has the majority of cases that have gone to court.
This latest case has been filed by attorney in Madison County Circuit Court, and alleges that Robert J Smith, a resident of Edwardsville, died as a result of taking the painkiller. The suit claims that after receiving a prescription for the painkiller, Smith continued to take the medication for two years. He suffered a fatal hearth attack in 2002.
The suit goes on to state that when Smith was taking the medication he was unaware of the "dangerous nature of Vioxx, and the adverse cardiovascular effects that could occur due to consumption of and exposure to Vioxx."
The son of the decadent is seeking over fifty thousand dollars in damages. The suit also claims that Merck went ahead with studies to prove that the drug was safer for the stomach than many other painkillers, even though a clinical researcher had stated that "The possibility of increased cardiovascular risk is of great concern."
