The group of painkillers known as cox-2 inhibitors have come under intense fire over recent years because of the increased risk of heart problems that has become associated with them. This includes once popular drugs such as Vioxx, Bextra, and Celebrex, two of which have been pulled from the market as a result of these dangers.
However, in the latest Harvard Heart Letter experts have stated that traditional non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs are not blameless when it comes to causing increases in heart problems. This includes drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
The October 2006 issue of the letter stated that the risks posed by traditional painkillers such as these were well worth being aware of, even though thee risks were small. The drugs can not only boost blood pressure but can also affect the effectiveness of blood pressure medication that patients may be taking.
The traditional painkillers may also contribute towards a heart condition known as atherosclerosis, which is a process that clogs up the arteries through changes such as stimulation of the growth of smooth muscle cells inside arteries, and reduction in the blood vessels ability to relax.
