Following the second anniversary of the withdrawal of Vioxx, a controversial painkiller manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Merck, the deadline has now expired for the filing of new Vioxx related lawsuits in 22 states, which means that the steadily rising number of lawsuits against the company will now start to stabilize.
Over recent months, many lawyers and plaintiffs have been rapidly filing their cases in a bid to beat the deadlines, but for 22 states those still wishing to file a case over health problems caused by the painkiller will now find that they have missed the boat.
Merck already has thousands of lawsuits filed against it by those claiming to have suffered health problems as the result of taking the painkiller, as well as by families of those that have died from problems and complications allegedly caused by the drug.
Merck has been fighting each case on an individual basis, and so far this has proven beneficial for the company, as it has won many of the cases already heard. Officials from the company have stated that Merck will continue to do this with all future cases.
