Naproxen Could Be The Safest Option For Many Patients

Added October 16th, 2006

Following a number of studies, reports have been released by researchers in relation to the safest painkillers for patients to use, and experts have indicated that one of the safest – in particular for older patients with a higher concern when it comes to side effects – could be Naproxen, which is one of the older painkillers on the market.

The reports involved reviewing a variety of studies in order to analyze the risks associated with a variety of painkillers, and experts stated that most people would benefit from Naproxen because it does not increase the risk of side effects such as heart attacks, other heart problems, and strokes, like some other painkillers.

Naproxen is also available over the counter, and is cost effective because of the various generic versions of the drug that are available. However, experts also pointed out that this painkiller can cause gastric problems like a number of other traditional non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, and therefore may need to be taken in conjunction with other medication to protect the stomach lining.

Dr. Steven Nissen, head of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic and president of the American College of Cardiology stated: "I do think we should start with naproxen in the vast majority of cases. It's about balancing the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risk."
