Recent studies have shown that weight loss supplements that do not contain ephedra may also pose a health risk to consumers. Ephedra-based supplements have hit the headlines over recent months, and last year a ban was placed on supplements containing Ephedra. However, the latest research indicates that it is not only Ephedra that could be a concern when it comes to health risks.
The ingredient that is now under fire is bitter orange, which is also known as Seville Orange or Citrus Aurantium. This is because the ingredient contains a compound that is similar to Ephedrine chemically, and this is known as Synephrine.
One researcher stated: "It does seem these drugs affect blood pressure and heart rate at the same level we saw with Ephedra. I stop short of saying our study shows adverse events. Certainly overweight people with high blood pressure or heart problems should avoid these products."
The researcher also tested pure bitter orange products and stated: "They clearly show there is no increase in blood pressure, and an insignificant increase in heart rate after ingesting our product at doses that are more than most consumers would take in a day."
