Eleven people have been indicted after being found guilty of manufacturing their own versions of popular prescription medications and then going on to sell the fake drugs via the Internet. Those indicted come from four different states and Belize, and it is alleged that the scam was fronted by a 34-year-old.
Jared Wheat is said to be the main owner of Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, and it is alleged that he and a number of other parties opened a facility in Belize, where ingredients were ordered to manufacture and sell millions of pills. Many of these were sold via the Internet to US based consumers.
One attorney stated: "The indictment's allegations are disturbing because customers thought they were getting legitimate and safe prescription drugs over the Internet from Canada at cheaper prices, when in reality they received adulterated fakes that were crudely made in an unsanitary house in Belize."
According to reports the scam involved making version of 24 different drugs such as Vioxx, Valium, Lipitor, Viagra, and Ambient. Consumers were then duped into thinking that the drugs were the real thing, and were being sold through a Canadian pharmacy at a reduced price.
