The latest in a long line of pharmacy robberies has taken place in Salt Lake City, Utah. There has been a sharp increase in the number of robberies taking place at pharmacies over recent years, but the robbers are not after cash in most cases, but are after prescription medication such as Oxycontin, which can be sold on the streets.
This robbery in Salt Lake City took place earlier in the week at the Apothecary Shoppe, located at 1002 East South Temple. A man walked into the drugstore and demanded Oxycontin pills, which are very powerful painkillers that are derived from opium and are available by prescription only.
The man indicated that he had a gun by putting his hand in his pocket, and the pharmacy employee then complied with his demands, and the man took the pills and fled. He was described as Caucasian, around five feet and ten inches, about 160 pounds, and around 25 years of age.
Oxycontin is a painkiller that is normally prescribed for those in severe pain, such as cancer sufferers, and has been at the center of concern in many states because of the high levels of abuse that have become associated with this medication, which has become known on the street as Hillbilly Heroin.
