A jury in Little Rock, Arkansas, has found the pharmaceutical giant Wyeth not guilty of negligence in relation to its drugs trials on the hormone replacement therapy drug Prempro. The trial was the first to take place against the company in connection with its HRT drug, and the jury found that Wyeth officials did not neglect to inform patients and medical staff about the cancer risks associated with the drug.
Around 5,000 lawsuits have been filed against the drug company in relation to Prempro, each accusing the company of negligence in the manufacturing, testing, and even the marketing of Prempro. The trial, which was that of Linda Reeves, age 67, was the first to take place.
Lawyers had alleged that the company did not give sufficient warnings to patients or to doctors, and that adequate studies were not carried out into the drug. However, a legal official for Wyeth stated, “I believe the jury agreed with us that Premarin and Prempro are some of the most widely studied medicines in the U.S."
The company has also stated that it will be defending itself in all individual trials, with the legal official also adding: "to vigorously defend all cases that are separate trials ... these cases will be tried on individual merit."
