Researchers who carried out studies into the side effects of the controversial painkiller Vioxx, which was withdrawn from the market in 2004, have now revealed that in addition to the known side effects, for which the drug has come under intense fire, there could also be additional side effects about which little was previously known.
The researchers that carried out the study state that there is now evidence to show that the cox-2 inhibitor, Vioxx, could also result in serious kidney related problems.
Previously, research had already shown that the drug could increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, leading to its withdrawal and resulting in thousands of lawsuits against its manufacturer, drugs giant Merck Inc.
The research was carried out by employees at the Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, and the Harvard Medical School. The researchers analysed over 100 studies that had involved tens of thousands of test subjects, and concluded that the drug could cause kidney related problems as well as additional heart problems.
