A class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of HRT drug prempro has been denied by a federal judge in Arkansas. Once viewed as a safe and reliable pill that could ease the menopausal period for women, many minds were changed following the results of a study.
The finding from this study indicated that long term use of Prempro significantly increased the risk of contracting diseases such as breast and ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots, and strokes. Findings also indicated that the drug put long-term users at high risk of contracting Alzheimers or dementia.
Three women sued the manufacturer of the drug because of the side effects that were linked to taking this hormone replacement therapy. In the event that the class action had been granted, millions of women that had taken the drug since 1992 could have been included. However, Prempro manufacturer Wyeth stated that a single lawsuit could not possibly resolve the issues connected with the litigation, and the judge agreed.
Although this class action has been denied, many people have filed and are still filing individual lawsuits against the manufacturer of the drug, which could mean Wyeth paying out multi-million dollar settlements to those affected by the drug.
