Merck Prepares For Next Vioxx Trial

Added September 29th, 2005

Following the loss of the first Vioxx case to go to trial, Merck, the drug’s manufacturer is preparing itself for the next trial. The second Vioxx trial is underway in New Jersey. The lawsuit is that of a Vietnam war veteran who took the drug for knee injury and pain.

Frederick Humeston took the controversial cox-2 inhibitor for just two months before having a heart attack four years ago. His legal aides are working to prove that taking Vioxx caused the heart attack and that the man had a perfectly healthy heart prior to taking the drug. However, lawyers working on the side of the drug manufacturer state that there were other contributory factors that could have led to the heart attack, such as obesity.

This is the second case to go to trial against Merck because of alleged health problems caused by the painkiller Vioxx, which was pulled from the shelves about one year ago. This was because tests and research indicated that the drug – which had been prescribed to millions and had netted Merck billions of dollars in profits – could increase the chances of heart attacks and strokes.
