Madison County Man To Be Charged For Theft Of Powerful Painkiller

Added September 28th, 2005

A 24-year-old man from Madison County is to be charged on various counts after breaking into a drug store in order to steal the powerful opium based painkiller, OxyContin. Thomas Vanriper broke into a branch of Wayne Drugs on Friday night. He was arrested by police as he tried to leave the building with prescription narcotics.

A police spokesperson stated: "There were various kinds of drugs, mostly OxyContin. At this point, we believe it was for personal use." The police charged the man with first- and second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny. In addition to this he was charged with criminal mischief and possession of burglary equipment.

A former police chief did not deny that the crime committed was a serious one, but stated that treatment should be looked at as well as punishment. He stated: "We're more concerned with the thing he stole, not with the fact that he broke into a store and touched someone else's property without permission."
