Celebrex Approved For Ankylosing Spondylitis

Added September 27th, 2005

Celebrex, one of the cox-2 inhibitors that has come under fire over recent months due to the potentially dangerous side effects of the drug, has been approved for the treatment of ankylosing sponylitis by the Food and Drugs Administration. The drug was already being prescribed for health problems including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, and a number of other health problems.

This cox-2 inhibitor is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The company has confirmed that the FDA has now completed prescribing instructions and guidelines. The FDA has also issued instructions for the packaging and labelling of Celebrex to be amended to include the risks that the medicine can pose, such as cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems.

A number of cox-2 inhibitors have come under fire over the past year, since research and investigation showed that these drugs could increase the risks of problems such as heart attacks, strokes, skin diseases, and various other problems. Other cox-2 inhibitors that were targeted included Bextra and Vioxx.
