According to researchers who have been carrying out studies, the cox-2 inhibitor Vioxx, which was withdrawn from the market in 2004, could actually reduce the risk of colorectal polyps, which are benign tumors that can affect older adults and can result in colon cancer.
The results of the study were recently published in the journal Gastroenterology as well as being published on the website of the American Gastroenterological Association. The results were reported by a Dartmouth researcher.
The lead author of the paper in the study, known as the Approve Study (Adenomatous Polyp Prevention on VIOXX) said: "These are exciting findings. "They show once again the potential for NSAIDs to interfere with the development of cancer in the colon and rectum."
Studies have already been carried out in the past that suggest a number of other non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce the risk of colon cancer, and researchers state that the latest finding show that Vioxx could also prove beneficial in reducing these risks.
