Thirty-nine new defendants have been named by California regulators in relation to a lawsuit against US pharmaceutical companies. The lawsuit alleges that the companies in question inflated drug prices at a cost of millions of dollars to taxpayers. Amgen Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C., Novartis AG, Sandoz Inc., Mylan Laboratories Inc. and Schering-Plough Corp. are some of the defendants named in the suit.
California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said: "We're going to drag these drug companies into courts of law because they've been gouging the public. We estimate each of the pharmaceutical companies could be liable for up to $30 to $40 million." However, spokespeople for some of the companies named have stated that pricing guidelines were followed to the letter.
The litigation started with suits against Abbott Laboratories and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Similar litigation to that in California is also taking place in other states around the United States, although it is thought that it could take years for a resolution to be reached. The lawsuits claim that the drug companies in question inflated prices by huge amounts, making huge profits from the inflation of prices.
