OTC Pill Approved

Added September 22nd, 2006

In a controversial move, the FDA has recently approved the sale of the morning after pill in an over-the-counter format for women over the age of eighteen. There was much concern from various groups with regards to this move, as many think that it will encourage promiscuity as well as the method through which the pill works.

The morning after pill works by causing the woman to expel the egg, which has been fertilized. It has to be taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse in order to be effective. However, some claim that this is in effect getting rid of a human being that has already been created because the egg has been fertilized.

Further concerns have been raised with regards to the enforced age restrictions, with some saying that this could result in unplanned pregnancies in minors under eighteen. Minors will still need a prescription to get the morning after pill, also known as Plan B.

Wendy Wright, president of the anti-abortion Concerned Women of America, stated: "If the FDA thinks that enacting an age restriction will work, or that the drug company will enforce it ... then they are living in a dream world."
