1,000 Oxycontin Lawsuits Filed In Staten Island

Added September 22nd, 2005

Lawyers in Staten Island have filed 1,000 lawsuits against the manufacturer of powerful painkiller Oxycontin. The lawsuits were filed in the Richmond County Clerk’s Office, and it is anticipated that many others will be filed in the weeks to come, which could make this the biggest civil case to ever take place in the area.

This is the area’s first ever mass tort and is likely to attract a lot of attention and cause quite a stir. In the lawsuits, many plaintiffs allege that having been prescribed the painkiller to treat various types of pain the drug quickly took a hold of them, causing addiction and taking over their lives. One lawyer that is dealing with around 250 of the cases stated: "It's a landmark case."

The county clerk’s office in which the cases were filed usually handles only one to 200 cases filed each day, so the 1,000 filings have proven something of a challenge. However, it is likely to take years for the case to actually come to trial.

After filing the suits, lawyers had to wait for hours as a small team of workers processed the paperwork. A spokesperson for the county clerk ‘s office stated: "We're equipped to handle whatever comes our way."
