A recent report released indicates that those that abuse prescription drugs as teenagers or in young adulthood are far more likely to go on to abuse harder drugs such as heroin and cocaine. In fact, the report indicates that prescription drug abusers are 12 times more likely to go on and abuse harder drugs. The report, from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, was released in July.
A spokesperson stated that some of the prescription drugs that could put people at increased risk of abusing harder drugs included prescription drugs such as Oxycontin, because of their ability to give people a high and to get them used to the feeling of being on a high.
In the report data indicates that around 10% of youths aged between 12 and 17 years abused prescription drugs in 2003. This was a rise of over 200% for the same age group in 2002.
The study further showed that in the 10-year period from 1992 to 2002, the figures of those abusing such drugs jumped by well over 500%. One spokesperson for the study stated: "It's greatly fed the whole heroin epidemic. Even 10 years ago, it was almost unheard of for teenagers to be using these kinds of drugs."
