A study has indicated that the heart risks posed by the withdrawn and controversial painkiller Vioxx could occur within just two weeks of taking the medication. The study was carried out by Linda Levesque and her team from Queens University. Vioxx, manufactured by Merck, was withdrawn from the market in 2004 because of the health risks posed, including heart attacks.
This is thought to be the first targeted study aimed at finding out more about the timing of heart problems in relation to the medication. The results are to be published online. Previous studies had confirmed that there was an increased risk of heart problems, and the latest study adds data with regards to the timings of these problems.
Lιvesque, of Queen's Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, stated: "A quarter of patients who suffered a heart attack while taking Vioxx did so within two weeks of their first Vioxx prescription. This demonstrates that cardiovascular risks from taking Vioxx may occur much earlier than previously believed."
According to researchers one in four people involved in the study who suffered a heart attack did so within just two weeks of starting the medication.
