Fake Drugs Now Multi-Billion Dollar Industry

Added September 14th, 2005

A report issued in the UK has confirmed that the fake drugs industry has now become a multi-billion dollar one, with many different types of fake drugs being seized all around the world. The report states that the drugs are usually sold via the Internet, and have netted the criminals so much in revenue that this business is fast becoming as common as narcotics sales.

The fake drugs contain little or no active ingredient, making them totally unsuitable for treatment. In some cases, the drugs may contain some active ingredient but in incorrect doses, which could prove dangerous as well as ineffective. The cost of producing these fake medications is low for the criminals considering the high level of revenue that can be gleaned from their sales.

British health authorities recently confirmed that fake packs of Lipitor had been seized. The drug, which is manufactured by Pfizer and is for the reduction of cholesterol, had been produced as fakes and was to be sold illicitly. Fake versions of Viagra pills had also recently been seized by authorities.

A spokesperson for the UK’s medicine intelligence stated: "Unfortunately, the increase in lifestyle medicines has created a demand on the illicit supply chain and people are increasingly buying these products, often in association with hard drugs. It's very much market-driven ... and the Internet is a major contributing factor."
