The Fitchburg State Board of Registration in Medicine has alleged that a doctor connected to two local hospitals continued to prescribe powerful prescription drugs even after his license had expired. The allegations claim that drugs, such as the opium based painkiller Oxycontin, were prescribed by neurologist Thomas Mikolinnas two months after his license expired.
The board alleged: "He continued to write prescriptions for Oxycontin, Percocet and Ritalin, which are all Schedule II controlled substances, until February 22, 2005." As well as being connected to two local hospitals, the neurologist also had his own private office. The hospitals with which the neurologist was affiliated have claimed that they didnt know of his license expiry until very recently.
The chief medical officer at one of the hospitals stated: "During the period of time that we were under the impression that his license was current and active, he may have been prescribing within the hospital." He added that the neurologists privileges were stopped as soon as they realized that his license had expired.
The doctor now faces a hearing with the Division of Administrative Law Appeals. The chief administrative magistrate stated it can take over 60 days to schedule a case. He added: "It proceeds as a case does. If the case is proven, then we recommend to the board that it impose an appropriate sanction."
