Twenty-nine people have been arrested in Miami after a drug ring was discovered at a school. Those arrested had been using fraudulent and forged prescriptions in order to obtain Oxycontin pills in the thousands. The drug ring was made up of school bus drivers, attendants, and co-workers, although no teachers are thought to have been involved according to reports.
The Oxycontin tablets were obtained from a number of South Florida pharmacies, but an attorney has confirmed that there appears to be no evidence of any of the tablets being sold to children. The workers used their health insurance cards as part of the scheme. School officials were unable to comment at the time of reporting.
The penalties that those charged face could be very severe with up to 20 years imprisonment and a million dollar fine for each count of possession and intention to distribute. The fraud charges could incur additional prison time and fines.
A powerful painkiller, Oxycontin is derived from opium, and has become a widely abused drug second only to marijuana. Many are becoming concerned over the abuse levels of this drug, and authorities are coming down harshly on offenders.
