A cardiologist has testified at the wrongful death trial of Robert Ernst in Texas, and has stated that Vioxx was not responsible for the death of the man. The doctor stated that there was lack of evidence of a heart attack or a blood clot in the autopsy of the man, who had taken the once popular painkiller for eight months.
Dr. Pratt stated that the results of the autopsy spoke for themselves, and he put the death of the 59-year-old down to an irregular heartbeat and clogged arteries. The drug, Vioxx, was pulled from the market last year amidst controversy with regards to the heightened risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, the doctor concluded that there was no evidence of a heart attack in the death of Ernst.
Ernsts case is the first Vioxx one to go to trial, and was filed by the decedents wife. Dr Pratt said in a statement: I dont think this patient had a heart attack. I dont think this patient had a clot. I think its clear that this death was not due to Vioxx.
