Researchers have carried out a study and have stated that several common asthma inhalers could be responsible for four out of five asthma related deaths each year in the U.S. Researchers say that the inhalers containing salmeterol or formoterol should be taken off the market because they pose the risk of fatality.
The research was carried out by teams from Cornell and Stanford Universities, and involved the analysis of medical literature. Nineteen published trials involving nearly 34,000 subjects were analyzed as part of the research from which this data was drawn.
Based on their research, the teams stated that the medication, which are used to relieve the symptoms of asthma, also caused bronchial inflammation, which could lead to severe and even fatal problems in those taking the medication.
One official stated: "In total, there are about 5,000 deaths a year due to asthma, whether or not a person is taking a long-acting beta-agonist. We can show that overall it is statistically significant that, compared to patients taking a placebo, these long-acting beta-agonists kill a lot of people."
