The pharmaceutical giant Wyeth is going to court over its controversial drug Prempro, as one of thousands of Prempro lawsuits finally goes to trial. The hormone replacement therapy drug hit the headlines after it came to light that the medication was linked to the onset of breast cancer. There are many lawsuits still waiting to be heard, filed by those affected by this medication.
The case going to trial is that of Linda Reeves who went on to develop breast cancer in 2000, by which time she had been taking the medication for a number of years. She had been using another hormone replacement drug previously, but had been switched to Prempro a number of years prior to developing the cancer.
A couple of years after Linda developed the cancer, the link between Prempro and breast cancer became public knowledge, with government studies showing the increased risk of breast cancer as well as of heart disease from taking the medication.
Ms. Reeves stated: "I only took it as a preventative. Before that, I was healthy. It's just been devastating for me and my family. There's no way to describe it unless you're a woman."
