Celebrex, the controversial cox-2 inhibitor manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, appears to be making a comeback after suffering a massive attack on its reputation two years ago when it was found, along with other similar drugs, to increase a number of serious side effect risks.
According to figures, this year the annual sales for the medication are due to top over $2 billion, after plummeting to nearly $1.5 billion last year. Prior to the findings that resulted from the research in 2004 sales topped well over $3 billion.
Following the findings from the research that was carried out, the drug now carries one of the strongest warnings with regards to heart and stomach risks, and is also being more selectively prescribed by health care professionals.
Stephen Paget, chief of rheumatology for the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, stated: "The drug has been right-sized. It's been pulled back to an optimal group of patients ... who need it and who can tolerate it."
