Food And Drugs Administration Criticized For Having Ties To The Industry

Added September 1st, 2005

The Food and Drugs Administration has been criticized for having financial ties and links to the drugs industry, which critics say could and does affect the FDA’s decisions and creates a conflict of interest. It is claimed that the FDA can issue waivers to voting members on panels, who may have ties to the industry and therefore whose decision would be influenced.

The New England Journal of Medicine recently ran an article claiming that these waivers are all too easily available and affect what is a very serious issue – the safety of drugs used by millions. The author of the articles stated that cases involving such waivers "raise the general concern that waivers for potential conflicts are common and that the agency has paid insufficient attention to its -- and the public's -- interest in selecting scientific advisers who are independent of industry."

On the other hand, a spokesman for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, representing the drug industry, stated: "We know that many of the nation's best medical experts have been involved in important cutting-edge research projects funded by companies. We feel it would be a major loss for FDA advisory panels to lose their expertise, because these people are chosen for a reason: they are very good and they are very smart."
