A new drug safety bill has been introduced in the United States to try and improve drug safety and scrutiny. Introduced by U.S. Sen. Michael B. Enzi (R-WY) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), the new drug safety bill is known as the Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act of 2006.
The text of the new bill states that it has been introduced in order to "improve drug safety and oversight, and for other purposes." The testing, approval procedures, and labeling for drugs will come under closer scrutiny as part of the bill, and this will be done through amendments and improvements to the Public Health Service Act and the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act.
Kennedy stated: "It's critical that the FDA be given the ability to ensure that the risks of prescription drugs are adequately assessed and managed, so that drugs can be safely used by patients."
A spokesperson for Enzi stated: "The health committee hearings brought consensus regarding safety in light of Vioxx and other similar issues, as well as concerns regarding the pace of approval."
