A program that was designed to restrict the use of an acne drug that can cause birth defects in pregnant women is causing problems. Both doctors and patients are reporting that they face problems with the program, and nine out of ten dermatologists claim that they have had problems with the registry.
Problems were highlighted in a recent survey, which was carried out by the American Academy of Dermatology. Over eighty percent of doctors also reported that their patients had experienced problems with the program, which included interruptions to their medication.
The group's president, Dr. Stephen Stone of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, stated "Basically, the problem is that patients are having denial of access and delayed access to the drug, and that continues."
In 2005, when the iPledge Scheme was launched, the group had tried to delay the implementation of the program, as officials from the group were critical of how effective it would be. However, it did not succeed in delaying the program.
