A 60-year-old Jupiter doctor has been convicted on various drugs charges, including drug trafficking and racketeering. Known by patients as a dedicated doctor that was committed to his job, the doctor was convicted on ten counts of drug related offenses. Dr. Denis Deonarine pleaded with the courts as he was sentenced recently.
As the doctor addressed the courts, her asked for "mercy, leniency and empathy." He also told the courts that medicine is "my love, my hobby, my life, my career." Speaking of his work as a doctor, the Trinidad native added: "It cost me two divorces. I worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I took my own calls."
Despite his pleas, the doctor was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and was ordered to pay over half a million dollars in fines. Included in the drugs that he had been trafficking was Oxycontin, a powerful opium-based painkiller that has become increasingly abused on the streets and even by teenagers, second in popularity only to marijuana.
Prior to sentencing the doctor made an apology to both patients and his family for his actions and the "humiliation and disgrace" that stemmed from his actions.
