An analysis and evaluation of trial data for a new Merck painkiller has shown that there is no increase in cardiovascular risks when compared to traditional painkillers, according to Merck, the pharmaceutical giant. However, Merck added that more people withdrew from the study because of other problems, which included high blood pressure.
The drug is known as Arcoxia, and Merck states that full data should be made available later on in the year. This will then be submitted to the Food and Drugs Administration, as Merck tried to gain the agencys approval to market the painkiller.
An approvable letter was issued to Merck by the Food and Drugs Administration in 2004, which asked for more information on safety and effectiveness. The FDA stated that this additional information would enable it to make a decision on whether the drug could be marketed.
However, some experts have expressed concern about Merck pursuing the approval of the drug because of the reputation that has been left through its controversial withdrawn painkiller, Vioxx, coupled with concerns about blood pressure.
