A study recently carried out on a nationwide scale has shown that a large percentage of pharmacists have no idea that many of the drugs that they dispense have never actually received approval from the Food and Drugs Administration.
The results of the study were announced recently by Medical Marketing Research Inc. A random sample survey was carried out on 500 United States pharmacists, and the aim was to analyze their dispensing habits and learn more about their awareness when it comes to unapproved drugs.
Results from the study showed that over ninety percent of pharmacists were unaware that many of the products that they sold were not approved by the Food and Drugs Administration, with most pharmacists under the impression that all the drugs sold were actually FDA approved. However, there are thousands that have never received approval according to the FDA.
One of the products that came under focus as part of the study was quinine sulphate. Used for the treatment of malaria, the first FDA approved quinine sulphate products hit the shelves in July of this year. However, many other quinine sulphate products are dispenses that have never been FDA approved.
