A lawsuit has been filed against the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline after a baby, whose mother was taking the drug Paxil during her pregnancy, was born with severe heart defects. The lawsuit has been filed by Baum Hedlund on behalf of the parents of the child, Anthony and Matilda Vasquez, who are from Bedford in Texas.
The Vasquez’s son, Adrian, was born with severe heart defects after his mother took the drug during her pregnancy, and the two-year-old has so far had to undergo three open heart surgeries. He also has a pacemaker. Paxil, which is an anti-depressant, was taken by his mother throughout the pregnancy.
The family is seeking an unspecified amount as damages from the drugs giant, and claims that the company was negligent for failure to provide warnings about the risk of the drug on pregnant women and unborn children.
An attorney for the couple stated: "Adrian Vasquez is a tough little boy. The trauma he has endured in his brief two years of life is much more than most of us will ever have to suffer in our entire lifetime. The seriousness of these birth defects are such that, at the very first sign of danger, GSK should have issued a strong warning. Over 1 percent--or 40,000--pregnant women in the US are taking antidepressants. Given the popularity of Paxil, thousands of babies are at risk."
