Joining Forces To Beat Prescription Drug Abuse Problem

Added August 18th, 2005

Over recent years, there has been a marked increase in relation to prescription drug abuse, with kids and addicts abusing powerful painkillers such as Oxycontin in order to get high. This has also led to an increase in other crimes, such as threats to medical staff and robberies at pharmacies. Agencies and officials have raised many concerns about this rising problem, and are now hoping to take steps towards easing the issue.

The police departments, doctors, and pharmacists are hoping to join forces in a bid to cut down on these prescription drug abuse problems. The problem has become so bad among the younger generation that prescription drugs now rate second only to marijuana in the popularity ranks, with younger people managing to get a hold of them quite easily.

Ritch Wagner, associate director of Purdue Pharma law enforcement division, stated: "The teens are stealing the scripts from friends, neighbors, family and most often -- medicine cabinets. You used to have to monitor the liquor cabinet; now you better be watching the medicine cabinet."

Oxycontin seems to be one of the favorite drugs of prescription drug abusers, as its opium base means that it can give a quick, effective high. However, there are a number of other powerful prescription drugs that are abused as well.
