A Wilmington based health research firm has carried out a recent study, which suggests that the controversial anti-cholesterol drug, Crestor, is at least as safe as similar drugs in its class. In a process that involved the evaluation of health insurance claims from anti-cholesterol drug patients between 2000 and 2004, a number of findings were made.
It was found that the rates of muscle weakness for those taking Crestor as opposed to other anti-cholesterol drugs were similar. It was also found that the rate of kidney failure in those on Crestor were actually quite a bit lower than for many other anti-cholesterol drugs. The study was commissioned by the non-profit National Lipid Association.
The drug is manufactured by pharmaceutical drug giant AstraZeneca. The results of the study have been used by the companys investment banker, as it recommended people to buy shares. It may also support an FDA study that was carried out in the past, which asserted the drugs safety.
The safety of crestor became the topic of controversy last year after the drug was blasted by watchdog group Public Citizen.
