It has been revealed that the Food and Drugs Administration is to collaborate with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in order to try and improve the safety of prescription drugs and medical equipment through monitoring any apparent patterns that emerge in patients taking particular drugs or using particular devices.
The program will work through the monitoring of health care databases, which will be checked to see whether any patterns are evident with any particular medications or devices. This will involve both federal and private health care databases.
The FDA hopes that this will improve the chances of picking up on potential problems at an early stage, whereas at present the agency has to rely on voluntary reports, which could be submitted for assessment months or years after an incident has occurred.
The FDA will also be publishing reports, which can then be used by doctors to provide them with information relating to potential problems or emerging patterns with drugs and devices.
