A Columbus police officer has been arrested and released on bond after being caught falsifying prescriptions in a bid to get hold of the opium based painkiller Oxycontin. Philip Matteo was recently arrested after trying to get hold of the drug. The 54-year-old police veteran now faces a number of charges.
Some of the charges faced by the police officer include forgery and unlawful acquisition of a controlled substance. After being held at Muscogee County Jail the officer posted bond. The officers arrest came after a detailed investigation carried out by police, which had been ongoing for two months.
Oxycontin is a powerful prescription painkiller that is opium based, and recently more and more cases of abuse of this painkiller have come to light. In addition to falsifying prescriptions, other cases involving this drug include robberies on pharmacies with the robbers demanding Oxycontin and similar pills, cases of children getting hold of the pills from medicine cabinets and selling them at school, and illegal selling of the drug on the streets.
