First Vioxx Lawsuit Begins

Added August 12th, 2005

The first of many lawsuits against Merck, the pharmaceutical giant responsible for manufacturing and marketing Vioxx, started recently in Texas. Carol Ernst is the first of many with lawsuits against Merck, and although Merck tried desperately to delay the trial it was finally time to face the music as judge and jury took their seats in the courts.

It is thought that this first trial will hopefully answer many questions with regards to the Vioxx issue, and will make things easier and more straightforward to other plaintiffs and their lawyers. Many think that once the first trial is over, and depending on the outcome, lawyers in other trials will have a clearer idea of what they need to do in order to do the best for their client.

Vioxx is a cox-2 inhibitor that was widely prescribed for a number of years for various types of adult pain, including arthritis, menstrual cramps, and general pains. It was prescribed for about four years, but recently revelations have come to light about the dangers of this medication, and it was recalled from the market as a result.

In addition to this, there have also been allegations that Merck was aware of the dangers of the drug, and that a number of documents have been uncovered that show Merck tried to hide details of health risks associated with Vioxx.
