Patient Puts Gun To Doctor’s Head

Added August 11th, 2005

A Marion County patient put a gun to his doctor’s head in a bid to get hold of more of the powerful prescription painkiller, Oxycontin. The patient wanted to get a longer prescription of the opium-based painkiller, and as a result put a gun to the doctor’s head and demanded more of the medication.

John McGinnis was already being prescribed the narcotic painkiller, and had asked his doctor to increase the prescription. It was when the doctor refused to do this that the patient pulled a gun on him and forced him to increase the prescription at gunpoint. Captain Phil Burton stated: "He actually pulled the gun out and stuck it to his head. and said 'you will write this for a year or I will kill you’."

The Captain also described how he used the gun on Dr. Moore, stating: "He racked the slide once and put it to his head and nothing happened. He racked the slide again and nothing happened."

The doctor, his life threatened by the patient, eventually gave in and wrote the prescription for one year. However, a pharmacist stated that had the patient tried to dispense the prescription he would have found it difficult: "It would not get filled until we talked to the doctor. It would be highly rare that one gets filled for a year's worth of medicine."
