Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has filed a lawsuit against Merck, the pharmaceutical giant that manufactures the controversial drug, Vioxx. The lawsuit is for misconduct and alleges that Merck relied heavily on data from animal testing in a bid to make out that the drug was safe, when all the time there was more and more evidence mounting up with regards to the drug’s dangerous side effects in humans.
It is reportedly the first time that a pharmaceutical company has been sued for this reason – for judging a drug’s safety based upon animal test results as opposed to on proper human testing. There are a number of problems with animal testing, and these include inconsistent results, the fact that there is a species difference, and the fact that the results are not always an indication of what the drug will be like for humans.
In the lawsuit, Merck is accused of knowing full well what the limitations and problems were with animal testing, and yet still using animal test data in order to keep vioxx on the market by claiming it was safe for humans. In addition to this accusation, the lawsuit also states that Merck failed to use more conclusive methods even though it was aware of methods that would give a clearer idea of safety for humans.
