The Food and Drugs Administration has approved flu vaccines for the 2006/2007 season. The vaccines have been manufactured by four pharmaceutical companies, which include GlaxoSmithKline, MedImmune, Sanofi Pasteur, and Chiron.
Every season the flu vaccines are reformulated to ensure that they cover against the strains of flu that are most likely to cause problems in the coming season, as determined by experts in the field. Around $100 million will be made by the four pharmaceutical companies from sales of these vaccines.
Most of the flu vaccines that have been approved by the FDA come in injection form. However, the one from MedImmune comes as a nasal spray, which is called FluMist.
Sanofi Pasteurs vaccine has also been approved, but earlier in the year one of its manufacturing plants came under fire from the FDA after signs of contamination were found. However, the company has stated that this problem was sorted out.
