The doctors and researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston have announced plans to start testing again with the cox-2 inhibitor, Celebrex, which has recently caused controversy due to the potentially dangerous side effects. The research team had been using the drug in trials involving the prevention of lung cancer.
In December the trials were suspended after the drug hit the headlines, and many began campaigning for its withdrawal from the market. This was because tests revealed that the drug could heighten the risk of severe health problems and could prove dangerous and even deadly. The trials were suspended by request from the manufacturer of the drug, Pfizer Inc.
However, since then the Food and Drugs Administration has recommended that Celebrex continue to be used in these tests. One of the study leaders stated: "At this point, there is nothing available to deter lung cancer in smokers, even in those who have quit. In looking at the data, we believe the potential benefit to the patient is greater than the risk and we have ample safeguards in place to monitor patients even more closely than they are now."
