Around 50 French people have joined a class action suit against the pharmaceutical giant, Merck, claiming that they suffered adverse health effects after taking one of the companys drugs, the cox-2 inhibitor Vioxx. The drug has been identified as increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients.
The French participants have come to an agreement with a U.S. law firm, and this enables their claims to be included as part of a class action U.S. lawsuit. In addition to the French lawsuits, there are around 100 people in the UK that have or will be filing lawsuits against Merck. The pharmaceutical giant is likely to face many lawsuits around the world.
Around 2,500 lawsuits have been filed in the U.S. alone against Merck, with those that claim to have suffered ill health effects suing for multi-million dollar sums. Lawsuits have also been filed by those that have lost loved ones due to health problems caused by this medication.
Merck withdrew the controversial drug from the market in 2004, after reports that it increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, since then there have been allegations that Merck already knew about these risks.
