Canadian Panel Votes To Bring Vioxx Back

Added August 2nd, 2005

A specialist Canadian panel has recommended that Vioxx be allowed back onto the market by Health Canada. The votes came in at 12-1, and experts on the panel came to the conclusion that the benefits of taking Vioxx far outweighed the risks of heart attacks and strokes. The drug was withdrawn voluntarily by Merck in 2004 after it was revealed that it significantly increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

A spokesman for the federal health department stated that any application for the re-introduction of Vioxx will be assessed on its merits, stating: "There's no clear reason not to reintroduce it back on the market if there is a request by the manufacturer."

A spokesperson for Merck – the pharmaceutical giant that manufactures Vioxx – stated: "At this particular point, Merck has not made any decision whether to seek approval to bring back Vioxx, but we do look forward to discussions with Health Canada."

Many patients have been urging officials to allow Vioxx and other cox-2 inhibitors back onto the market, stating that they should have a choice with regards to whether they wish to take the risk in order to ease everyday pain.
