There is fresh concern for authorities all over the country, as another drug gains popularity among dealers and abusers. The prescription medication that seems to be the latest trend for abusers is a painkilling patch that is far more potent that morphine or heroin, and is used for the treatments of severe pain, including cancer related pain management.
The patch is called Fentanyl, and authorities have dealt with a number of arrests as well as seen a number of overdoses in relation to the abuse of this drug. The patch normally delivers pain relief over a 72-hour period but when abused can be dangerous and even fatal.
One officer stated: "People suck on the patches," he said. "When you take it orally, you have no idea how much is getting into your system. These patches are loaded with all sorts of narcotics." Authorities have stated that the drug is sometimes being abused by those that have been officially prescribed the medication by doctors, but it is also being sold to abusers by other people who have obtained it from their doctor but have no intention of using it themselves.
